New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks underwent surgery on his right foot Friday, a source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.
The Giants said Nicks is expected to miss approximately 12 weeks, but a person familiar with the wide receiver's injury told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that it was more of a "four-to-six week" recovery period. The person told Schefter the team's regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 5 is still "in play."

The New York Post reported that Nicks had a screw inserted in the foot during the procedure performed by noted foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte.
The 24-year-old Nicks had 76 catches for a career-best 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns for the Giants last season. In three NFL seasons, the North Carolina product has 202 catches for 3,034 yards and 24 TDs.
In 2010, Nicks missed the last four games of the season with a broken toe in his left foot.
The fifth metatarsal generally takes a long time to heal because there isn't a lot of blood flow to the area.
Cornerback Prince Amukamara, selected by the Giants in the first round of the 2011 draft, fractured his fifth metatarsal in training camp on Aug. 6. He did not play in a game until Nov. 20 and never looked 100 percent in his rookie season as the Giants won a Super Bowl.
The Giants will have a total of nine OTAs before mandatory minicamp June 12-14. They report to training camp at the University at Albany on July 26.
