It's the same old story, just another year for Osi Umenyiora.
He wants more money; the New York Giants don't have to give it to him, and there are unfulfilled trade rumors. Asked if the Giants tried to trade Umenyiora during the draft, GM Jerry Reese said that "all options" are under consideration.
Translation: We were willing to listen. No one gave up the goods.
"Our first choice with respect to Osi is that he will play for the Giants and retire as a Giant," Reese said. "That is what we would like to happen. Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now. So we would still like to make it work. Hopefully it will work out. But all of our options are always open."
It's hard to imagine Umenyiora moving on now. He's worth more to the Giants than a future pick, unless that future pick is in the first round. No teams have been willing to give that up for Umenyiora because they know that the 30-year-old will require a big new contract in a trade.
Reese added that he has offered Umenyiora a contract extension two years in a row and hopes Osi retires a Giant. So nothing has really changed. Expect an unhappy but productive Umenyiora to suit for the Giants once again this year.
It's not such a bad arrangement for Tom Coughlin.
