New York Giants Draft Grades: Grading the Selection of Jayron Hosley - Bleacher Report

In a 2012 NFL Draft filled with surprises, the New York Giants continued to break from the norm by selecting Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley with the 94th overall pickâ€"their third selection of a junior-eligible player thus far.

The cornerback position took a ton of hits during the 2011 season and it seemed the Giants never had enough depth to keep up. This offseason, the defending Super Bowl champions have done all they could to ensure that will not happen again.

Hosley was a brilliant shutdown corner for the Hokies during his collegiate career, boasting great ball skills and top-flight coverage skills.

At 5’10” and 178 pounds, Hosley is undersized, but compensates for his stature with a defensive performance well above his head. He is not a stalwart defender against the run by any means, however, and would benefit greatly by improving his game in that regard.

A tough zone corner, Hosley is a very good fit within the Giants' defensive scheme. He is an ideal player for their Cover 2 system and should be a key contributor for defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and the Giants defense.

Not a detrimental need, the selection does come a bit too soon with other needs and better prospects on the boardâ€"even at the cornerback position.

However, general manager Jerry Reese is a proven winner when it comes to the draft process and has had success with worse prospects. The addition of Hosley is a move clearly based on scheme fit, depth and potential.

His impact will be minimal early. He is best-suited as a nickel corner during his rookie season while contributing on special teams like the Giants love their young players to do.

In due time, though, and with some hard work on the part of Hosley and the Giants coaching staff, Hosley could develop into a starter in New Yorkâ€"or a dependable No. 3 option should he be unable to unseat stellar corners Corey Webster and Terrell Thomas.

Grade: B

Hosley is a good value, being a perfect scheme fit with the Giants. He is raw and will need some time to develop as well as the opportunity to strip away some concerns about his character. But Hosley is the type of under-appreciated player that excels for the Giants. His ability to force turnovers makes him a big plus in New Yorkâ€"he had nine interceptions in 2010 for the Hokies.
