The New York Giants plan to select the best player available in the 2012 NFL Draft, regardless of position.
Apr 19, 2012 - The New York Giants have a few needs in the upcoming NFL Draft, one of them being running back, where Brandon Jacobs left and Ahmad Bradshaw is recovering from injury and hoping to return in time for training camp.
But the Giants will not select a draft choice based solely on need, general manager Jerry Reese explained during a Thursday press conference.
"We're conscious of what we think our needs are, but we try to pick the best player in the draft. We do try to fill holes in free agency when we get an opportunity to do that, but we never say let's get a certain position in the draft. We just try to pick the best player," Reese said.
Due to their Super Bowl championship, the Giants' first pick is the final selection in the first round. Reese explained the team's philosophy of drafting with the No. 32 pick.
"You just wait and see if somebody is going to fall to you or if there is somebody you may be able to move up for, that you're in love with," he said. "It's always a good problem to have when you're picking 32. More likely, somebody we have ahead of our 32nd pick in our first row, more than likely somebody will be down there where we want to pick."
