The New York Giants extended break from action ends today when the defending Super Bowl champions welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to MetLife Stadium (1:00pm ET start time, FOX). Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs New York Giants Odds are forecasting a better result for Eli Manning and company in Week 2 as they are lined at -7 in todayâs scrap with the Bucs. The game total in this NFC tilt is presently set at 44 points.
When a Super Bowl champion opens its season at home against a team it has defeated five times in the last six meetings between the two squads, most people expect it to come away with a win. The Giants spoiled those expectations last Wednesday, though, when they lost 24-17 to the Cowboys as a -4 against the spread home favorite.
Dallas dominated its divisional rival in almost every way, posting an advantage in all stat categories with the exception of penalties and fourth down conversions. Eli Manning turned in a solid performance in the losing effort, throwing for 213 total yards and one touchdown, but he was out-dueled by the much maligned Tony Romo, who finished the game with 307 pass yards and three touchdowns.
Given New Yorkâs Week 1 face plant; there is a strong feeling the team will have a much better showing against what some would label an inferior Buccaneers squad. Nonetheless, Tampa Bay looked anything but inferior last Sunday, besting its divisional rival Carolina 16-10 at Raymond James Stadium.
The Bucs were not overwhelming on offense, as evidenced by the 258 yards they posted, but an efficient Josh Freeman (16-of-24 for 138 yards and one touchdown) coupled with a stingy defense proved enough to frustrate Cam Newton (two interceptions) and company.
Tampa Bay exhibited a new attitude under first year head coach Greg Schiano as well, showing an ability to stay disciplined and assignment sound. Should it play with the same intensity and smarts this afternoon, the Giants could, perhaps, suffer another unexpected hiccup.
Free Pick: Take the Buccaneers +7. Tampa Bay is 6-4 straight up and 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 games as a road dog with a spread between 4 and 7.5 points.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs New York Giants Odds:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +7 (-110), Over 44 (-110), +270 (Moneyline)
New York Giants -7 (-110), Under 44 (-110), -325 (Moneyline)
