New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur told reporters Monday that he was leaning toward returning next season instead of retiring, as the Devils prepare to take on the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Finals starting Wednesday.
ESPN reported that the 40-year-old goaltender Brodeur said he was âleaning to coming back.â It doesnât sound like was too unsure of his decision:
âYou know, I canât say no. But I doubt it,â Brodeur told reporters after Mondayâs practice. âIâm really enjoying this. Regardless of what happens this series, we made a great step last year, and weâve got a good team together, a good coaching staff, and itâs fun, you know?
âFor me itâs all about having fun coming to the rink. Some say itâs fun to retire on top or whatever, but at the end of the day, when Iâm gonna say itâs over, itâs gonna be over. Iâm not gonna come back. Weâll see. I hope you donât have to replay that tape there. And thatâs gonna be it, I wanna make sure I make the right decision. But right now, Iâm leaning to coming back.â
Brodeur is preparing to play in his 200th career Stanley Cup playoff game when the Kings come to New Jersey for Game 1 of the Finals on Wednesday night. Before the season, he told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., that this season might be his last.
âPeople will mention it, and itâs hard not to think about it,â Brodeur told the paper in October. âIt might be. Iâve had a great run, and Iâve had a lot of fun doing it.â
Brodeur stopped 33 of 35 shots Friday night as the Devils beat the New York Rangers to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
