Despite the efforts of the Los Angeles Lakers and New Jersey Nets, Dwight Howard remained a member of the Orlando Magic to open the NBA season. The 6'11" center is having a rather typical Howard season through nine games with Orlando, averaging 18.6 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. His 24.9 Player Efficiency Rating is the third-highest PER of his career, so he is still as productive as ever.
And Howard still wants to be traded.
"Nothing has changed," Howard told Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated on Sunday. "There's no need to focus on anything else besides going out every night and playing hard for 48 minutes or however long I'm on the court. All that other stuff is up to the Magic and up to my agent."
As Amick notes, Howard's preferred destinations are the Lakers, Nets, or the Dallas Mavericks, but neither of those three teams is in any hurry to trade for the superstar center. "The Lakers -- via executive and owner's son, Jim Buss -- have made it clear they won't be trading both forward Pau Gasol and center Andrew Bynum for Howard," said Amick.
It seems like, with no sense of urgency by any of the parties, we won't see Dwight Howard move until we get closer to the NBA trade deadline of March 15, if at all. It's just a matter of whom will blink first.
