The Devils went into Edmonton and defeated the injury-plagued Oilers, 2-1 in overtime. New Jersey now has the most overtime wins in the NHL.
Jan 12, 2012 - The New Jersey Devils don't stop winning in extra time, and that continues in a special teams-filled match, beating the Edmonton Oilers, 2-1, moving ahead of Colorado for the NHL's most overtime wins with 11. Johan Hedberg got the start for the Devils, and took care of 22 of 23 shots that he faced in Wednesday's match.
The Devils have given up the most shorthanded goals in the league, but they also lead the league in scoring the most shorthanded goals. They were able to score one more shorty as Kovalchuk recorded his first of two points on the night after stripping the puck from Jeff Petry and heading down the ice for a breakaway goal.
Ales Hemsky tied it up nine seconds into their fifth power play before the halfway point of the third period to send the game to overtime. However, New Jersey took advantage of a power play earned late before the end of regulation and scored at the 1:06 mark of the extra frame, courtesy of Zach Parise.
Edmonton started the season well, but has struggled mightily lately, as they are now 2-7-1 in their last 10 games. Most of that is due to missing their best offensive players, as the Oilers are without Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Whitney and Tom Gilbert Wednesday night -- all due to injury.
