New York Jets Sign Offensive Tackles Stephon Heyer, Ray Willis - NY Jets 101

The New York Jets will sign offensive tackle Stephon Heyer and offensive tackle/guard Ray Willis. The free agent additions will be expected to compete in training camp this summer for a roster spot. Heyer and Willis have a combined 61 NFL starts under their belts along the offensive line. Sports Business Journal reported the signings first.

The New York Jets had failed to address their need for offensive line depth through the 2012 NFL Draft and free agency. Robert Griffin is a long-term project, so the Jets needed to bring in some players to compete in training camp. With the added roster size this offseason, there's no harm in bringing in Stephon Heyer and Ray Willis to take a look.

Honestly, these two signings will likely amount to camp bodies. They say everything happens for a reason and while I can't tell you why your latest personal crisis is happening, I can tell you that there's certainly a reason these two players were still available. They are not upgrades over Wayne Hunter, so don't plan on seeing either of these guys starting at right tackle for the Jets in 2012.

Stephon Heyer started the entire 2009 season for the Washington Redskins. He moved on to the Oakland Raiders in 2010 and only started two games. Heyer is 6-6, 330.

Willis has played right guard and right tackle in the NFL, but missed the 2010 season with an injury. He was in camp with the Miami Dolphins in 2011, but was cut and then signed with the New Orleans Saints. Willis is 6-6, 304.

Neither the Raiders nor the Dolphins had particularly impressive offensive lines in 2011. Being that these guys couldn't crack those lineups, don't expect them to make much noise here with the Jets. It would be an upset if either of these guys made the 53-man roster over Vlad Ducasse and Caleb Schlauderaff.
